Adaptive Reuse > Rickman House
Rickman House was originally constructed in 1906 as the Rickman Hotel. This Kalamazoo historical landmark was adapted to provide multifamily apartments for 84 low income, special needs tenants. This multifamily building underwent a complete interior gutting and reconstruction to recreate the apartment building. The greatest structural challenge was to relocate the elevator and stair shaft, allowing for a larger elevator and code-compliant stairs. A second stair shaft was also added to the multifamily building for improved emergency egress. The exterior historic restoration preserved the historical elements of this century old building.
