Rickman House
Originally constructed in 1906 as the Rickman Hotel, this Kalamazoo landmark has served the city providing homes for 84 low income, special needs tenants. This building is currently undergoing a complete renovation which will include a totally new interior layout, providing larger studio style units for the residents. Probably the greatest change being made to the building is the original elevator and stair shaft is being removed to make room for a larger elevator and code-compliant stairs. A second stair shaft is also being added to the building to provide improved emergency egress. One of the major challenges of this project is preserving the historical elements of this century old building while updating it so that it can continue to serve future generations of Kalamazoo residents.
